if用法詳解（六）if與whether
whether 和if同是從屬連詞，本無交集，但在表達“是否”之意時卻能共通，甚至互換。具體展開如下：
①if 引導條件狀語從句:假如；如果
If you ask him, he will help you.
你若要求，他會幫你。
②whether引導讓步狀語從句:不管；無論
I shall go, you come with me or stay at home.
不管你陪我來還是呆在家，我都會去的。
③作"是否"解時，if多用于口語；whether作"是否"解時，多用于書面語中
Karan asked whether/if I could pick up lunch on my way home.
卡冉問我能不能回家的路上帶午餐。
I wasn’t sure whether/if it would rain, so I took my umbrella.
我不知道會不會下雨。
④只用whether不用if的情況：
(1) 后接or (not)連用
Haikou is a nice place to be, whether it is in summer or in winter.
海口是一個好地方，無論是在夏天還是冬天。
I need to decide whether I'm going to college or not.
可以去學校，也可以不去學校，由我自己決定。
It remains to be seen whether or not this idea can be put into practice.
說不準這個想法是否會付諸實踐。
(2) 后接不定式連用
I can't decide whether to go to the library or stay home.
我不能確定是去圖書館還是呆在家。
He seemed undecided whether to go or stay.
是走還是留他看起來猶豫不定。
It’s time for Toronto to decide whether it wants to keep its artists.
是時候由多倫多決定它想不想留住藝術家。
(3) 跟介詞后
Everything depends on whether you are for it.
一切有賴于你是否贊成它。
It relies on whether he will give you a hand.
那決定于他是否愿意伸出援手。
We're discussing the problem of whether to accept the offer.
我們正在討論要不要接受那個提議。
(4) 當賓語從句提到句首表示強調時
Whether this is true（or not）,I can’t tell.
我不能判斷這是不是真的。
Whether you can come, I don’t care.
我不在意你來不來。
Whether it is right or not, we wonder.
我們想知道它是否正確。
(5) 引導主語、表語或同位語從句
Whether they can finish the work on time is still a problem.
他們是否能按時完成他們的工作還是個問題。
The trouble is whether they will support the plan.
問題是他們是否會支持這個計劃。
There is some doubt whether he is the best man for the job.
有點懷疑他是否是最適合這份工作的人。
（6）容易產生歧義時
Let me know whether you can come.
告訴我你是否能來。
比較：Let me know whether you can come.
如果你能來，就告訴我。
(7) 在wonder / not sure/ discuss等之后
I'm not sure whether I could pass the driving test.
我不確定能否通過駕駛考試。
We'll discuss whether he needs an operation.
我們將討論他是否需要手術。
I wonder whether I can get some advice from you.
不知能否得到你的一些建議。
