1. GIVE UP
Give up:認輸、停止努力、戒除
She will not give up her children without a struggle.
她不會輕易放棄自己的孩子。
He suffered a serious injury that obliged him to give up work.
他受傷嚴重，不得已只好放棄工作。
2. ABANDON
Abandon:徹底放棄，不再關心，特指停止對某人的照顧、支持；還可以指離開、廢棄某地或某物。
His mother had abandoned him at an early age.
他在幼年就被母親遺棄。
He decided not to abandon his Chicago residence.
他決定不搬離在芝加哥的住宅。
3.DESERT
① 形容逃兵等可恥的放棄行為時，會用到一個比abandon更具有貶義的單詞：desert[d??z??t]。它指不忠誠、不負責任地拋棄。
He deserted his wife and daughter.
他拋棄妻女。
② desert還有“在對方需要的時候辜負某人”的意思。這種用法中，desert的主語是某種能力，不用人做主語。比如：
His luck deserted him.
運氣沒有眷顧他。
③ desert[?dez?t]在做名詞時是沙漠的意思，它在做動詞時可以表示離開某地讓它荒涼。比如：
The tourists have deserted the beaches.
游客們離開了沙灘。
4. FORSAKE-
過去式:forsook,過去分詞:forsaken
①Forsake:對親密關系中斷、棄絕。
He forsook his wife for a career.
他為了職業生涯拋棄了妻子。
② 可以指放棄某種價值觀或興趣
I will not forsake my ideals.
我不會放棄我的理想。
①Give up指放棄努力、投降；
②abandon強調不再關心或支持；
③desert的指責意味更強；
④forsake用于對親密關系的放棄。
