克拉納赫是德國最早描繪神話題材的畫家，在他的作品中，宗教題材帶上世俗的氣息，古代神話題材卻又帶上宮廷趣味。 他是與丟勒，格呂內瓦爾德并駕齊驅的第三位大師。由于他的兒子也是畫家，因此人們稱他為老盧卡斯。
作為一個宮廷畫家不可避免沾染上宮廷審美趣味，失去了維也納時代的清新的藝術效果，上流社會的人物形象和衣飾、氣質占據了畫面。
但他筆下的女子肖像，卻異常引人注目，尤其那是嫵媚的眼神。
